Judge people gently and give new people a second or third chance to make a good impression. Remember that most new students are nervous and will try very hard to make friends. If people around you seem overzealous or say the wrong things, be patient with them. You may find yourself acting similarly soon enough.
Your room is also a place of opportunity by virtue of the people you attract to it. Early in the semester when you are hanging out or studying in your room, keep the door propped open. The music you are playing or the way you have decorated your room may attract people with similar tastes. One or two people walking down the hall may see your open door and take a moment to see how you have set up your room. If you say hello and invite them in, you can begin to get to know each other. This will give you the chance to talk about the things in your room that are special to you, such as family photos, posters or paintings, or a favorite book or movie. Of course, there will be times to keep your room door closed, such as when you are sleeping or are on the phone with your family. Otherwise, keeping your door ajar is an easy way to potentially meet new people.
Your Residence Hall
Just outside of your room is a building full of new and diverse people. Make a point to walk up and down the hallways of your building and look for rooms with open doors. Walk by these rooms slowly and look for an opportunity to start a conversation with the people you see. They may have decorated or arranged their rooms differently than yours, so something intriguing may catch your eye. You will also hear music or see decorations that match your interests. When you see a person sitting in a room make eye contact with him, smile, and say hello. If he invites you in, take a few minutes to stop and talk to him. You may find that those few minutes turn into a couple of hours and, before you know it, you could be making plans to have lunch with this new acquaintance.
